Special Concern Species Inventories
Plant specimens of the species of concern (henceforth known as the "target species" - often a
rare, threatened or endangered species) will
be examined at the nearest college herbarium.
Information such as taxonomic descriptions and time of flowering will be reviewed prior to
field visitation.
Your site will then be systematically examined by ecologists familiar with the regional
vegetation. They will have familiarized
themselves with the target species, its habitat, plants associated with the target species, and other
relevant information.
Each of the areas examined will be photographed to provide a
permanent record of habitat conditions.
Following completion of fieldwork, a report will be prepared describing the
results of the plant species and habitat survey. The report will include such information as
the location of communities that provide habitat for the target species,
disturbance factors, and general species associates. The sample areas will be identified by us
either on base maps provided by your engineers, or on digital ortho-quads with
GPS information
gathered by SER on them. Our GPS data can be given to your engineers to include on project plans.
Tree Inventories
Some cities require tree inventories on construction project sites. These note the species,
locations, and sizes (DBH) of all trees on the property. A crew of SER employees with
expertise in tree identification and GPS surveying
will complete an on-site inventory. The
final data can be produced as a GIS overlay for use by project engineers in programs such as ArcView.
