Working With Wetlands and Wildlife Workshop

SER provided technical expertise about wetlands through workshop presentations at this Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) series, which was presented several times across the United States. SER presented at the portion of the workshop series that took place in Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; and Houston, Texas.
The 2 day Working with Wetlands and Wildlife workshop was presented by WHC in order to provide information to and encourage discussion between land managers, regulators, consultants, and scientists. Topics focused on how wetland resources may be managed to maximize both human and ecological benefits. This was a collaborative effort between WHC, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE), U.S.D.A. Natural Resources Conservation Service, Tennessee Valley Authority, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Svoboda Ecological Resources (SER).

SER suggested this workshop series and performed many of the presentations for this national event. Topics SER covered included a discussion of what wetlands are, why wetland enhancement is important, practical uses of constructed wetlands, methods and opportunities for wetlands restoration (co-presented with Gary Gordon of Cargill Fertilizer), and the importance of monitoring and documentation. A field trip focusing on what makes a successful management project was co-presented between SER, Butch Register of ACOE, and local speakers. SER staff coordinated with WHC to help create a resource handbook for the project.

Proactive methodologies of wetland management were demonstrated in this collaborative effort between WHC, SER, and multiple government agencies. Attendees learned effective ways to plan and implement wetland management, creation, and restoration projects.
