Combining GPS and GIS Technologies - A Wetlands Example Juniper Systems Differential GPS (DGPS) data can be easily imported into many common GIS programs, such as ArcView. GPSI and our sister company, Svoboda Ecological Resources, routinely use Juniper Systems DGPS data to give our clients accurate boundary, distance, and area measurements. Please examine the following image. Data were taken with a Juniper Pro4000 computer and a Trimble AgGPS132 receiver by Svoboda Ecological Resources staff. Data points were then imported into ArcView and overlayed onto a digital ortho-quad (i.e., a DOQ or digitized aerial photograph) produced by the USGS. Different sets of data points were easily highlighted in contrasting colors to represent distinct types of information. Areas of polygons created from the Juniper Systems DGPS data were easily calculated using ArcView.
This particular data set was used to determine the amount of wetland and buildable upland
our client had available on this site. Different colors were used to differentiate
wetlands that were likely to be considered
non-jurisdictional (i.e., "incidental"
wetlands that would not have to be replaced if altered) from wetlands that had
jurisdictional status (i.e., wetlands that would have to be mitigated for if altered).
Maps and calculations like these can help property owners, prospective buyers, and
land managers make sound land use decisions.
